Helen Turner
Kauai Artist
Aloha, my name is Helen Turner. I am a pastel artist, living on beautiful Kauai for over twenty years. My passions are playing music, painting and sharing these gifts. The elements of painting that attract me are color, form and content. My intent is to find some new friends that share my vision of beauty.
Born in East Hampton, New York, I studied art and music at Queen’s College and exhibited in East Hampton at Guild Hall. At that time, oil painting and photography were my mediums. Antique shops sold my photographs of the area’s vanishing farm era and my large oils were of landscapes and abstract close-ups of sea shells. In 1990, I had a showing of my “shells” and photographs at the Artisan’s Guild of Hanalei.
Pastels are a wonderful medium for me. They are vibrant and incredibly versatile. I am a member of The Pacific International Pastel Society, the Kaua’i Society of Artists, and the Garden Island Arts Council. Exhibiting regularly in juried and member shows, I also try to enter as many pastel competitions as I can and have had my pastels published in several national periodicals. Painting “en plein air” (out in the open air) whenever the weather permits, gives me the opportunity to explore the magical light here in the islands. Spending time with my family, playing jazz flute with my guitarist partner, and scanning the stars with my telescope are my passions. Painting helps me to express my love for life here on Kauai.
Helen Turner recently won the Grand Prize of Excellence in the Pastel Artists of Hawaii 3rd Annual Juried Show. Helen's pastel Spring Floods was the painting chosen by Richard McKinley, a nationally ranked pastelist and teacher.
