I am endlessly inspired by the natural beauty of Kauai’s landscape. In my painting I attempt to heighten the dramatic contrast between light and shadow, capturing the vivid colors that make up the flora and fauna of this tropical island.
Beyond capturing Kauai’s lush landscape and ocean, I study the human figure through painting. Portraits and animal portraits are also a focus of my work.
I have established myself as an equine artist. Studying their anatomy and movement, I aspire to capture the majestic beauty of the horse.
One of my greatest challenges seems to be knowing when to abandon learned rules of painting. This involves the courage to repeatedly destroy and recreate the rendering as part of the process of painting. Although aesthetics are subjective, paintings that I admire express an Alchemy of sorts: a marriage between science and magic; technique and intuition; knowledge and experimentation; the defined and the undefined.
